Ayurveda is an over 5000-year-old system of traditional medicine from India that emphasizes health in mind, body, and spirit. If we take care of these three domains and keep them in harmony, we can experience true health and vibrancy.

Reiki is a therapeutic technique from Japan during which the practitioner channels healing energy from their hands into the recipient.

What happens during a consultation?

I'll start by getting a thorough history of your symptoms, as well as your diet and lifestyle. We will determine your primary constitution type or dosha, and then I will make recommendations for practices that you can adopt to feel better, according to your dosha.

What is a dosha?

One of the foundational principles of Ayurvedic science is that everything, us included, is composed of five main elements: space, air, fire, water, and earth. The doshas are these elements as they manifest in humans. There are three doshas: vata, which represents air and space, pitta, which is the embodiment of fire and water, and kapha, water and earth. We all possess all three doshas, but usually one or two are prominent. Our prominent dosha is the one that is most likely to go out of balance. I can determine your dosha type based on the questions I ask you and my observations of you. There are also plenty of dosha quizzes that you can take online if you are curious about your dosha type. Here is one I recommend: https://www.banyanbotanicals.com/pages/dosha-quiz

How is Ayurveda different from Western medicine?

Ayurveda is based on the premise that in order to be truly healthy, we must find the cause of any symptoms and treat the cause. Western medicine functions mainly by treating the symptoms with medication, surgery, or some other treatment, but does not necessarily consider the cause. Causes of disease can be mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual. Ayurveda treats all of those domains, as opposed to Western medicine, which tends to focus on the physical symptoms.

What happens during a Reiki treatment session?

We will begin with a conversation about the reasons you have come for treatment. These reasons could be stress, anxiety, depression, any other emotional difficulty, or physical pain. You will lie down on a massage table, fully clothed (you'll take your shoes off), and close your eyes. The room will be dark and comfortable. I will send healing energy through my hands to your main chakras. I don't have to touch you but can lay my hands on your head, legs, and feet if you are comfortable with that. You will feel deeply relaxed and may even fall asleep! Afterward, we will have a conversation about your experience and I will recommend possible follow-up actions to take.

What is a chakra?

Chakras are energy centers in the body and we can channel energy through them. There are seven main chakras and they run up the spine from the tailbone through the crown of the head. Each chakra is responsible for the energy of a certain area of the body and of certain emotions and facets of life. Reiki directs healing energy through these chakras so that they are balanced and functioning properly. Unbalanced chakras can lead to mental, spiritual, or physical distress.

What will I feel during a Reiki treatment?

It widely varies. Most people feel very relaxed and peaceful afterward. During the session, you might feel tingling or pulsing sensations, feelings of warmth or coolness, or perhaps nothing at all. You may feel energized afterward, or you may feel a little tired. Some people say they see different colors and some may get emotional. Tears are common and are a sign that healing is taking place. It is completely non-invasive and there is no pain or discomfort involved at all.
